HIIT

Why should I do HIIT Training?

HIIT training or High intensity interval training is any exercise that alternates between bursts of high intensity effort and less intense effort or rest.  HIIT training can take many forms and vary widely.  The timing of the work and rest periods can vary as can the type of exercise that is done.  For example, one person may do all cardiovascular exercises working intensely for 30 seconds and then rest for 30 seconds while another person may choose to do a combination of strength and cardio exercises working hard for 20 seconds and resting for 10 seconds.  Both of these examples qualify as HIIT and both will yield the benefits of this type of training.

The benefits include:

  • Efficiency-One round of a max interval Tabata (one exercise like squat jumps for 8 rounds working for 20 seconds and resting for ten seconds) will yield the same results as a 30 minute treadmill power walk or run)

  • Increased Fat Burning-The intensity of the exercise kicks the body into hyperdrive to repair itself.  As a result you body burns more calories and fat in the 2 hours after exercise than you do with a steady state workout.

  • No Equipment is Necessary-You can do a HIIT workout anywhere and with nothing more than your body weight.

  • A Healthier Heart or Improved Aerobic Capacity - A Journal of Physiology study in 2006 by Gibala et. al suggests that intense interval training is indeed a time-efficient strategy to induce rapid muscle and performance adaptations comparable to traditional endurance training.  Take Home:  You can improve your heart health without spending tons of time in the gym.

This is fantastic but how do I get involved?
