Hydration

As the summer months approach we think that hydration is of greater importance.  What we may not realize is that adequate hydration is important at any time of the year.  Staying properly hydrated does many things for your body.

  • Maintains proper body temperature

  • Lubricates joints

  • Helps transport nutrients

  • Stimulates metabolism

  • Maintains healthy skin and hair

  • Promotes regularity

While it may seem that any liquid will do, water is best!  So how do we calculate how much water we should drink daily.  The tried and true wisdom suggests 64 oz. a day.  However, the actual amount needed can vary from one individual to another depending on their size and activity level.  To calculate how much you need follow these steps.

  1. Calculate your body weight

  2. Multiply your weight by 2/3

  3. Add an additional 12 oz. for every 30 minutes of exercise

That may see like a staggering number but here are a few suggestions for reaching that goal.

  • Keep a glass of water by your bed.  Drink a glass before bed and one right as you wake up.

  • Buy inexpensive bracelets that can help you keep track.  Start the day with all the bracelets on one wrist and as you drink 8 oz. of water place the bracelet on the other wrist.  By the end of the day all the bracelets should be on the other side.

  • Drink 2 cups of water before each meal.  Experts have found that doing this simple act results in 5 lb. of weight loss a year on average and helps maintain healthy body weight.

  • Change it up a little by drinking fizzy water or infusing your water with fruit.
